Brexit Amendments

Brexiteers running after a fantasy

Responding to both Sir Graham Brady’s and Dame Caroline Spelman’s amendments being pass yesterday Jamie Stone, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said:

“These votes show the lack of consensus in the House of Commons. MPs have voted both to rule out a no deal Brexit and to setting the Government on a collision course with the EU, ramping up the chances of no deal.

“MPs who voted in favour of Brady’s amendment were knowingly voting for a no deal Brexit. The EU had made it very clear that it would not reopen negotiations on the backstop. These MPs are running after a fantasy and it’s the British people who will pay the price.

“Theresa May is once again running down the clock and continues to kick the can down an increasingly short road. She is gambling with time we don’t have. The only way to break this parliamentary deadlock and avoid a disastrous no deal Brexit is to return the decision to the people allowing a People’s Vote on the deal with the option to remain in the EU.”

Responding to 14 Labour MPs voting with the Conservative Government against Yvette Cooper’s amending last night, Far North MP Jamie Stone said:

“Labour MPs who sided with the Conservatives have moved us one step closer to crashing out of the EU without a deal which will be a disaster for those in the Far North. Jobs, infrastructure and health care in my constituency all rely on EU citizens to fill vital roles and on EU funding.

“As they did with the Immigration Bill on Monday, Labour MPs have once again facilitated Theresa May and the ERG in their pursuit of a no deal Brexit.

“The best way out of this mess is to go back to the people and give them the final say on Brexit. This is what I, and the Lib Dems have fought for since 24th June 2016, and we will continue to do so.”
