End exploitation of cocoa farmers

Far North MP, Jamie Stone, has co-sponsored a motion in Parliament calling for an end to the unfair exploitation of cocoa farmers in the developing world.

The move comes after Jamie signed a Fairtrade Foundation petition calling for the UK government to target UK Aid in a way that supports farmers to achieve a living income.

World cocoa prices recently fell by more than a third, which has resulted in cocoa farmers being hit the hardest.

Mr Stone commented:

“We all love chocolate, but it’s completely unacceptable for cocoa farmers to be forced in to poverty when they produce it.

“World cocoa prices are falling, and farmers in the developing world are currently earning less that 75p a day, which is less than half of what they need for a good standard of living.

“They are struggling to afford essential goods and services such as access to safe water, medical treatment, and education for their children.

“That’s why I am supporting this motion which calls on the Government to target UK aid so that a living income can be introduced for cocoa farmers to ensure that they earn a fair wage, and I would encourage anyone who supports the campaign to sign the Fairtrade Foundation petition.”
