Responding to an announcement by the Scottish Government they will be investing £12million in maternity services, Far North MP Jamie Stone said:
"While I of course agree that investment to ensure the right level of care for premature babies is vital, this is another example of funding stopping at the central belt.
“The Scottish Govenrment is once again ignoring expectant mothers in my constituency who face a 100mile trip to give birth as maternity facilities in the Far North are downgraded.
“We urgently need more funding in the Far North to ensure all mothers can be guaranteed a safe and local delivery and this is something I have been asking the Scottish Government for for a long time.
“I have also asked the Government to carry out a risk assessment for those mothers being forced to travel such long distances while in labour, often on poorly maintained roads, but the Government have yet to respond.”
