Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement that the UK will today table legislation to set a target for net zero carbon emission by 2050, Jamie said:
“This announcement is a step in the right direction but does not go far enough to address the climate crisis we are facing.
“Last month the UK Parliament backed a motion to declare a climate emergency, but the Tory Government still refuses to support this call.
“And we cannot effectively address climate change while pursuing Brexit. Climate change is a threat that doesn’t start and stop at international borders and only by working closely with European allies, as a member of the EU, can we set higher EU standards, increase energy efficiency and introduce a binding international treaty to end plastic waste.
“The Tory Government needs to take this seriously, declare a climate emergency and reverse the damaging policies they are putting in place which threaten the environment.”
