Raise a dram to those producing Scotland’s iconic drink
Figures released today by the Scotch Whisky Association show that the contribution of the Scotch whisky industry to the UK economy has grown by 10% since 2016 to £5.5bn.
The industry has been buoyed in recent years by record exports and with several new distilleries beginning production and opening their doors to tourists.
Commenting Jamie said:
“This shows just how vital the Scotch whisky industry is not only to Scotland but also to the UK economy.
“It also shows the importance of frictionless trade with the EU, given that the European Union remains the largest region for exports, accounting for 30% of global value.
“We will not be able to guarantee continued growth in this market if we create barriers with our largest Scotch Whisky export partner. Brexit in any form, and particularly if we crash out of the EU, will be incredibly damaging to the Scotch Whisky market.
“As the Scotch whisky industry continues to grow and puts Scotland on the global map, we should all raise a dram to those who work to create Scotland’s most iconic drink.”
